Our Story: The Legacy of Peter Panos Bespoke Tailor

An American Dream Built Through Tailoring

Our story is rooted in determination, personal service, and a lifelong commitment to the craft of bespoke tailoring.

Peter Panos began his journey with only two dollars to his name. He knocked on doors, introduced himself to potential clients, and demonstrated the tailoring skills that would eventually establish his reputation in San Francisco. Through years of hard work, dedication, and attention to every garment, he turned his abilities into a successful business.

In 1978, Peter opened his own store in San Francisco’s Union Square. That milestone marked the beginning of the business our clients know today. Since then, we have continued to serve San Francisco professionals, executives, grooms, business owners, and public figures who value clothing made with purpose and precision.

Today, we are proud to be known as a San Francisco master tailor since 1978. Although styles and wardrobes have changed over the decades, our central commitment has remained the same: every client deserves clothing built around the individual rather than standardized sizing.

More Than Five Decades of Tailoring Experience

Peter brings more than 50 years of tailoring experience to every commission. His work has helped establish Peter Panos Bespoke Tailor as a trusted destination for custom clothing and professional alterations in San Francisco.

Our clients have included business professionals and celebrated personalities, including Pixar’s John Lasseter and San Francisco Symphony conductor Michael Tilson Thomas. Regardless of a client’s profession or public profile, every person receives the same focused service and attention to detail.

Our longevity is based on principles that have guided us from the beginning:

  • We work directly with each client.
  • We prioritize fit, proportion, and comfort.
  • We use premium fabrics from respected European mills.
  • We create garments around individual measurements and preferences.
  • We approach alterations with the same care as new commissions.
  • We do not rely on standardized sizing to define how a garment should fit.

These principles allow us to create clothing that supports the client’s lifestyle, reflects personal taste, and remains relevant beyond a single season.

More Than Five Decades of Tailoring Experience

A Personal, One-on-One Experience

One of the defining features of our business is direct access to Peter. Clients are not passed from one associate to another during the tailoring process. Peter personally handles the consultation, measurements, fabric discussion, fittings, and final adjustments.

This one-on-one structure helps us understand more than basic dimensions. We consider posture, proportions, movement, wardrobe needs, personal style, and the setting in which the garment will be worn.

The initial appointment is a conversation. We discuss what the client needs, whether that means a professional business suit, formal tuxedo, wedding suit, three-piece suit, custom shirt, or improvements to an existing garment. From there, Peter provides guidance informed by decades of experience.

Our goal is not to impose a particular look. We help each client choose details that work for the individual, including fabric, structure, lapels, pockets, buttons, lining, collar, cuffs, and overall silhouette.

What Bespoke Means to Us

Bespoke tailoring begins with the individual. Unlike off-the-rack clothing, which is produced according to standardized sizes, a bespoke garment is created from scratch using a pattern drafted specifically for the client.

That pattern accounts for the client’s measurements, posture, proportions, and preferences. The garment is then refined through multiple fittings so adjustments can be made before final delivery.

For us, bespoke means:

  • A pattern created for one client
  • Detailed personal measurements
  • Fabric and styling selected with the client
  • Multiple fitting and refinement stages
  • A garment shaped around the client’s body
  • Direct guidance from an experienced tailor

This process creates a level of personalization that cannot be achieved by simply choosing a standard size. The result is clothing designed to fit, flatter, move comfortably, and represent the person wearing it.

What Bespoke Means to Us
Custom Clothing for Professional and Personal Milestones

Custom Clothing for Professional and Personal Milestones

Our work supports clients through many important moments. A custom business suit can help a professional present a polished and confident image. A bespoke tuxedo can provide the right balance of tradition and individuality for a black-tie event. A custom wedding suit can reflect the groom’s personal style while complementing the formality and visual direction of the celebration.

We specialize in:

  • Custom business suits
  • Custom wedding suits
  • Custom tuxedos
  • Three-piece suits
  • Custom dress shirts
  • Jackets, trousers, coats, and related garments
  • Professional clothing alterations

Each commission begins with the purpose of the garment. We then help the client select appropriate materials, construction details, and styling choices.

Fabrics Selected for Quality and Performance

A well-made garment begins with the right material. We offer fabrics from respected European mills, including Holland & Sherry, Loro Piana, Scabal, and Vitale Barberis Canonico. For custom shirting, we work with premium sources such as Alumo and leading Italian mills.

Fabric selection is about more than appearance. Weight, texture, breathability, durability, drape, and intended use all influence the final result. A business suit worn regularly has different requirements from a tuxedo reserved for formal occasions. San Francisco’s climate and the client’s travel schedule may also affect the best choice.

Peter helps clients evaluate these practical considerations while selecting a fabric that supports their preferred style.

Expert Alterations Under One Roof

Our services are not limited to garments created in our studio. We also provide professional alterations for clothing that clients already own.

Alterations may include:

  • Adjusting jacket or blazer proportions
  • Shortening or refining sleeves
  • Hemming or reshaping trousers
  • Improving the fit of dress shirts
  • Adjusting wedding suits
  • Correcting fit through the shoulders, waist, or seat

A carefully executed alteration can improve how an existing garment looks, feels, and moves. Peter approaches this work with the same precision and attention given to a new custom commission.
